The State Patrol eagerly announces the expansion of grant funding to assist Coloradoans who have been victimized by auto theft or catalytic converter theft. Colorado residents in need who have been victims of auto theft may be eligible to receive funding to offset some of the specific costs associated with these crimes.
This program is specifically designed to offset the secondary costs associated with vehicle theft and has been expanded to include aid for the costs of vehicle repair and other wider services. This is in addition to the original costs that included expenses such as alternative transportation, towing and storage fees of a recovered vehicle, costs to clean and sanitize a recovered stolen vehicle, and vehicle and catalytic converter hardening to prevent future victimization.
Some of the expenses that victims may now be eligible for are:
- Temporary alternative transportation
- Public transportation
- Ride-share services
- Rental vehicle services
- Cleaning and sanitation fees
- Towing and storage fees
- Vehicle repair reimbursement for repairs directly related to the motor vehicle theft
- Stipend to help offset replacement costs of a stolen catalytic converter
- Catalytic converter hardening devices
- Aftermarket vehicle theft prevention devices (e.g., steering wheel locks, engine immobilizer, alarms, remote start systems, etc.)
- Other potential goods and services directly involved in secondary motor vehicle theft expenses
