Firefighters were called to two separate vehicle fires in Broomfield over the past week, said Sara Farris, public information officer with North Metro Fire Rescue.
A Kia Sol went up in flames around 8 p.m. Thursday on Highway 36, near mile marker 49.6, Farris said.
The driver was able to pull over and get out of the car without injuries, and no other vehicles were involved, she said.
The cause of the fire was likely mechanically related, but the exact cause is not known, according to Farris.
Then a Volkswagen went up in flames around 7 p.m. Tuesday near Highway 287 and Nickel Street. The driver smelled smoke and was able to pull over and they escaped, along with the passenger, unharmed, Farris said.
The cause of the fire was also mechanically related, but the exact cause was unknown, she said.
“Due to the cars both being engulfed in flames, it’s very difficult to determine what mechanically caused the cars to ignite,” Farris said. “Neither fire appeared to involve an EV nor a lithium-ion battery fire — which are fires we are starting to track, due to increased occurrence nationally.”
Neither fire was suspicious, she said.
