Sixty kittens arrived at the Humane Society of Boulder Valley on Sunday as part of an effort to improve the lives of cats at risk in Los Angeles.
“The kitten population in Los Angeles is at a crisis point,” said Jackson Galaxy, who led the transfer.
Galaxy, an author and host of Animal Planet’s “My Cat From Hell,” chose the Humane Society of Boulder Valley because he used to work for the nonprofit.
"I'm ecstatic to be returning to my 'home shelter' where I started my animal welfare career 30 years ago," he said.
The organization partnered with the Jackson Galaxy Project, a program that’s dedicated to helping cats, to transfer the kittens by a van dubbed the ‘kitten express.’
After the animals arrived, they were evaluated by veterinary, behavior and training teams, said Jan McHugh-Smith, CEO of the Humane Society of Boulder Valley.
“Together, we’ll provide these animals with the shelter, medical care, behavior support and love they need until they find their new homes,” McHugh-Smith said.
The organization, at 2323 55th Street in Boulder, expects the kittens to be ready for adoption by Wednesday, she said.
“I’m confident our community will come together to help us give these cats and kittens a second chance here in Colorado.”
More than 1 million feral cats roam the streets in Los Angeles, according to KTLA. Many of those cats have several litters of kittens each year.
