The Children, Youth and Families department at the city of Longmont launched a new early childhood education website that aims to simply the process of finding “affordable, high-quality early childhood education and care for all our youngest community members,” said Jenny Diaz-Leon, community coordinator for the Children, Youth and Families Division.
Finding early childhood education or care can take time and effort to navigate. There are several resources available that can lead families in many directions. The city launched its new website to simplify the process.
The website offers families insights into ECE provider types, financial assistance for childcare and kindergarten readiness tips. The site also offers an interactive map to filter childcare providers to meet the family's needs. The map can locate providers based on their proximity to a family’s home or workplace, Colorado Child Care Assistance Program status and licensing capacity.
The new site falls under the Longmont City Council’s priorities to see that children under age 5 receive appropriate, affordable and high-quality care and education.
“The city council has made early childhood education a priority because we believe that it’s a game changer for our children’s future and our city’s future,” said Harold Dominguez, city manager in a video on the site. “As we engaged in this work it was surprising how many people didn’t realize the incredible impact early childhood education can have on our children and our community.”
The site also offers resources for people looking to begin a career in ECE, potential providers and those looking to become licensed.
Friends, family and neighbors make up 60% of the childcare providers in Longmont. On April 6, the city is hosting a gathering for these providers at the Longmont Senior Center. The event allows providers to connect, share insights and collaborate on strategies for ongoing city support. The event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Registration is required.
