Broomfield Democrat William Lindstedt is on pace to defeat Thornton Republican Stacie Dougherty for the open seat to represent House District 33.
Election night returns as of 11 p.m. on Tuesday revealed Lindstedt was leading Dougherty 61% to 38%. At that point, Lindstedt had received 21,798 votes compared to 13,765 for Dougherty.
“If everything holds, I look forward to representing the good people in the district,” Lindstedt said.
House District 33, which includes Broomfield, Superior and portions of Erie and Westminster, was last held by Rep. Matt Gray, who withdrew his candidacy prior to the June primary race.
Lindstedt credited his strong showing to an effective grassroots campaign.
“We had hundreds of people volunteer, contribute and knock doors,” he said. “It was a real team effort.”
Lindstedt noted the day and night effort undertaken by his campaign staff to pull ahead in the race.
“We worked really hard to build a bipartisan coalition of folks across Broomfield and Thorton to win this race and to represent everyone across the district regardless of their partisan affiliation,” he said.
The State House is familiar ground for Lindstedt, who worked for five years as staff in the Colorado House majority prior to being elected to the Broomfield City Council.
“It's kind of surreal coming into it as an elected official, assuming everything holds,” he said.
In her candidate profile published by the Leader, Dougherty cited cost of living concerns, public safety and drug overdoses as top priorities.
“Colorado is rapidly becoming unaffordable for the working and middle class,” she said.
Dougherty could not be reached for comment on Election Night.
