BOULDER – YWCA Boulder County has announced that it will be partnering with the Boulder JCC and YOUnify to host The Power of Peacemaking, a thought-provoking film screening and community-strengthening workshop featuring the documentary The Abortion Talks at the Boulder Jewish Community Center (Boulder JCC), 6007 Oreg Ave., Boulder, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 30.

The Abortion Talks is an inspiring film based on the true story of the aftermath of the shooting of two abortion clinic workers in the 1990s, and the path to peace paved by years of secret meetings between women on opposite sides of the issue.

The program will include a short workshop after the film screening that will include an interactive discussion with filmmaker Sarah Perkins and local community leaders to discuss community organization-based techniques that can transform stereotypes into genuine mutual understanding and turn conflicts into collaboration.

The event will flip the script by using abortion not as a cultural flashpoint, but as a vehicle to create dialogue in bridging divides.

“Boulder JCC, YOUnify, and YWCA Boulder County welcome people of all backgrounds and beliefs to join us to watch this film and draw inspiration from the women in it,” said Debbie Pope, CEO, YWCA Boulder County. “In these polarized times, we have partnered with the Boulder JCC, YOUnify, and the community not only to draw inspiration but to provide tools for paving a courageous path in strengthening our community, just as the women of the Abortion Talks did three decades ago,” she added.

Perkins and her husband, Josh Sabey, are the filmmaking team that founded the organization J&S Ltd. They have overseen the entirety of The Abortion Talks project from development to post-production as co-directors, co-editors, and camera operators.

Their previous film, American Tragedy, won Best Documentary at the Boston Film Festival, and was one of three films selected to premiere on opening night alongside Taika Waititi’s Jo Jo Rabbit and Terrence Malick’s A Hidden Life. It has since been screened around the country at festivals in Heartland, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, and others.

It was acquired by Gravitas Ventures and has been viewed over a million times. It is regularly the best-performing documentary for their distributor and has ranked in the top 20 most-watched documentaries on Amazon.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the film will begin promptly at 6:15 p.m. The event is free, and registration is required. Participants are encouraged to register in advance of the event as seating is limited: boulderjcc.org/power.
