Carol Beam, Cultural Resource Specialist, Boulder County Parks & Open Space, will share the department’s Altona Schoolhouse restoration project that captivated their staff for over four years.The 1880 Altona Schoolhouse is the oldest one room stone schoolhouse left in Boulder County and became a local historic landmark in 2013. The restored schoolhouse now offers public open houses, school group visits, and virtual tours.

Día de Muertos Apply to be an Altar Builder

Applications due Sunday, Sept. 24.

Apply to create and display an altar in our Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) community exhibition, Oct. 14 – Nov. 5, 2023. It's an opportunity to pay homage to deceased loved ones including family, friends or ancestors by creating a personal altar that will be displayed in the Longmont Museum’s annual exhibition. Applications are available in English and Spanish.

There is a tendency to think that well-adjusted people do not seek out terrifying and disgusting situations. Yet people flock to see the latest horror movies, and the more immersive the better! What gives? This apparent paradox - the "paradox of horror" is a particular version of the so-called "paradox of tragedy," which has fascinated philosophers since ancient times.

We'll begin with two short videos that describe the puzzle and suggest some solutions. We'll then get some more psychological insight by reading a short online essay by Professor Mathias Clasen, director of the Recreational Fear Lab at Aarhus University in Denmark.

About the Deep Thoughts Philosophy Reading Group

Meets every fourth Monday of each month, from 7-8:30 pm, via Zoom
Open to adults and older teens aged 16+.

This group meets monthly to discuss a classic short work of philosophy or an excerpt from a longer work.

Participants read the work prior to our meeting, and together we explore the meaning of the text and the value it offers us. All participants are welcome, including those who are unable to read the entire selection before the meeting.

Sessions are facilitated by Dawn Jacobs and other graduate students of the Philosophy Outreach Program of Colorado at CU Boulder (POPCO). Facilitators will focus on encouraging and guiding a group discussion/learning event rather than on teaching.

Join us for a special workshop with Museo de las Americas and create a Vejigante mask! The Vejigante is a masked creature who both fascinates and frightens young children with his mischievous antics, especially during festivals in Ponce and Loiza in Puerto Rico. This workshop explores Puerto Rico’s vibrant and rhythmic festivals, the mixed history of the Vejigante and the country’s relationship to the United States. Students will create the horned mask of the mysterious and charismatic Vejigante as they listen to the sounds of Bomba music and learn about cultural blending.

Longmont Museum Presents Centennial State Ballet Fall Showcase

Saturday, Sept. 30, 7 pm and Sunday, Oct. 1, 2 pm; $25 general admission, $22 students/seniors, $18 members

The Museum is pleased to present Centennial State Ballet’s Fall Showcase featuring dance from the Romantic to the contemporary era showcasing CSB dancers as well as professionals. The first half of the program will feature “Vespers” performed by CSB youth members followed by “Mobile” performed by Zikr Dance Ensemble, both pieces choreographed by Tomm Ruud. The second half of the program will feature CSB’s youth ballet dancers performing Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals—composed in 1886 by the internationally-recognized French composer Camille Saint-Saëns. The performance will feature narration by Alex Sedrowski as well as the work of the poet Ogden Nash.

About Partners: Partners has been serving youth and families since our organization was founded in 1978. Through the years we have continually sought to best meet the needs of our community, and have expanded our programs, service area, and mission to do so. Our Community-Based Mentoring Program was established as an intervention strategy for youth entering the juvenile justice system in Larimer County and has evolved to more of prevention-based approach to serve kids who are facing risk factors at an earlier stage. When it was clear that we should expand to have offices in Estes Park and Greeley, we did so.
